Why is talking about money and pay so taboo?!?! Time to destigmatize it! 💵💳
In honor of it being my first week funemployed (by choice 😌) since graduating in 2020, I wanted to share a little bit about my corporate journey and what I got paid.
For some context before diving into some numbers - I live in Seattle, where the cost of living is about 50% higher than the national average 😵💫These numbers also reflect my entire compensation package while actually being there (ie. I excluded stock that wasn’t vested before I left).
My career journey so far…
1. Vendor Manager @ a MAANG company
$64,000 base + $20,000 signing bonus = $84,000 total comp
This was my first job out of college! I graduated in 2020 straight into lockdown, so I felt super fortunate to land any role during that time, let alone one at a huge tech firm. Here, I gained a TON of experience working cross-functionally and in analytics.
2. Project Manager @ a tech consulting firm
$85,000 base + $5,000 performance bonus = $90,000 total comp
Wanting to get a wider array of experiences, I moved into consulting since the work would be client based. Luckily my previous role gave me tons of transferable project management experience, so I used that to leverage higher comp.
3. Senior Program Analyst @ a tech startup
$110,000 base + $1,500 stock options = $111,500 total comp
After a bit of time, I felt like I had outgrown the opportunities at my old role and wanted to be in an environment that had more whitespace. Going to a startup gave me a lot of new opportunities to figure things out and develop my abilities to problem solve.
I left my last role simply because I didn’t feel fulfilled and am now taking time off to pursue something more creative! I always thought that once I made it past the $100,000 mark, I’d be happy and feel successful. Turns out, making six figures isn’t all there is to life (lol who is surprised 🙃). However, I’m incredibly grateful for having well-paid roles for the past three years because it gave me the ability to save up. I know how much of it is a privilege to be able to leave my job and not work for a bit! 💛
