3 tips for being a great wife🫶🏼

I have been married for just under a year and am constantly learning what it means to be a great wife. Here are three tips that I’ve picked up that help me be a better wife and, in turn, make our marriage better.

1. I’ve learned to be his biggest supporter.

His dreams and goals are important. I want to be his biggest cheerleading and the person he goes to for encouragement. My husband is thinking about becoming a pilot in the future, specifically in the airforce (a huge career shift for him since he is currently a project manager and in the marine corps reserves). At first, this scared me but I realized that he is really passionate about this dream (since he was a kid!) and the best thing I can do for him is support him.

2. I’ve learned to be his wife, not his mother.

I’ve caught myself so many times trying to “parent” him, like telling him what he should or shouldn’t do. I’ve quickly realized that this does nothing but divide us and cause resentment to build up for him. I have to choose to let the small things go and simply be his wife. He is a grown adult and doesn’t need someone telling him what to do.

3. I’ve learned that showing him respect is crucial.

Men (this is a generalization) need to feel respected in order to feel loved. Ultimately, I want to show him I love him and this is the best way I’ve learned how. I can show respect by honoring his decisions/wishes, not interrupting him when he talks, spending intentional time with him, and in so many more ways. When he feels respected, he feels loved. This allows him to show me more love as well.
