'Stormbird Rising' - Messerschmitt ME-262 A-1c - Royal International Air Tattoo(RIAT) 2023 (Sunday)
This is a modern replica of the famous and feared World War 2 German Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Me-262,seen at RAF Fairford on the third day of The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2023. The aircraft, registration D-IMTT, is operated by Flugmuseum Messerschmitt and supported by the Airbus Heritage Flight. It's been based at Manching in Germany since its delivery in 2006. The appearance of this Me-262 at RIAT was the UK debut of one of these modern Me-262 replicas and the first time a Me-262 had flown in UK skies since 29 November 1945. It is flown by senior Airbus experimental test pilot Geri Krähenbühl.
While the Me-262 was starting up and taxiing, the Royal Air Force (RAF) Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Avro Lancaster was flying a solo display. I've included a brief shot of the Lancaster before it can be seen again departing in the background as the Me-262 moves towards the runway for its take off slot!
The Messerschmitt Me-262 - nicknamed Schwalbe (German for "Swallow") in fighter versions, or in fighter-bomber versions Sturmvogel (German for "Storm Bird") - I prefer the latter; was the first jet fighter to reach operational service. It featured leading advances for the time, including swept wings, automatic slats and a modular construction and was one of the most advanced jet aircraft to enter service before the end of the Second World War.
Developed as an interceptor, it entered service in April 1944, however its use in this role was delayed by Adolf Hitler who ordered that it should be used as a fighter bomber. No allied aircraft, including the Gloster Meteor, could match the types top speed. Eventually 1,430 Me-262s were produced and German pilots claimed 542 aircraft shot down, by the time that the war ended.
