Hi friends 👋🏻 Mid-terms exam season is hitting and today I want to share some 🍵 on how I improved my cap drastically by one whole grade in NUS Business and obtained first class honours within a year (I didn’t use all 5 S/U, just 2 in the 1st year) and graduated with a final CAP of 4.58 🙂
Not boasting okay!! I used to only share tips with people I sell my personal notes to but since I’m graduating alrd, no point keeping these secrets to myself✨
Just a little background, for my 1st sem I scored 4 (without SU) — B B+ B+ B+ A- and I S/U-ed my B.
The 2nd semester I scored A A A- A- B+ which is 4.6 without SU (but I S/U-ed my B+) and the 3rd semester I pulled myself up to a cumulative cap of 4.50 with A A A- B+. Since then, I’ve always made it a point to myself to maintain my first class honours and I’ve been pretty consistent with my A & A-.
💭𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱?💭
✨𝗜 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗺𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀, because in university studying hard is just not enough ❌
💭𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝘁💭
⚠️ Do take note of your learning style as it differs from person to person. Mine is auditory & visual which explains why these work for me!
1️⃣ 𝗕𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁
✨I would prepare before every lecture & re-look at what I wrote after lecture
— I keep track of every to-do that the lecturer wants us to do: ie read page chapter 1 of textbook: post-covid via a schedule book and after-covid via notion
— what really helped me was annotating my lecture notes with Goodnotes / leaving comments on the powerpoint as the teacher goes through
— Post-Covid, I voice recorded what the teacher talks about (Voice Memo OR Notability app has a function for this) - this is quite useful especially if you can’t keep up with the pace of what’s being said.
✨I did notes for almost every subject - mostly via Microsoft Word to save time. For those that I didn’t, I either bought notes online or had seniors who were kind enough to share theirs with me 🥰
— I realised that I’m very accepting of whatever the lecturer says, so I made it a challenge for myself by constantly asking questions and trying to find answers myself, after which I’d comment on the notes. Google & my textbook were my best friends‼️
— Collaborate with your friends to save time! E.g you read the textbook for chapters 1-5 and do notes for those, and your friend does 6-10 and so notes for those.
✨ Don’t forget to practice the papers uploaded! This is a must.
2️⃣ 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺
✨ I didn’t actively make friends in uni but my orientation group for orientation week was pretty bonded! A small group of us used to study in the school library every week together on Wednesdays 📖
✨ It’s really helpful when you group with people who have similar working styles as you. With the same goal in mind, it’s only natural that you do well! 🫣
— Don’t be afraid to siam friends who are not really good groupmates 🤣 No offense but some people are better off as friends 🥲❤️
✨ Don’t be afraid to step up & lead
— I’ve also been in groups with people who are pretty nua. The way to doing well? Being the one who takes the lead so it gets people thinking & moving 💯
✨ Be willing to help others
— I put in a lot of effort into my notes but I also acknowledge that sometimes my friends need that boost and so I lend a helping hand whenever (eg share my cheat sheet and notes)! In return, they also help me whenever I need help 🙂
3️⃣ 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝟭, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁
✨ Take time to understand the assessment criteria
— for me I don’t do that well for examinations bc I have anxiety issues 🫣 so I tend to pick those with higher % of class participation & assignment based work!
✨ Profs are an important factor to whether you do well, pick wisely!
— I’ve encountered profs who are just SO bad at teaching I have to self-learn everything and it became so effortful because lectures were a waste of time. It made me hate finance so much. In contrast, my marketing profs were (almost) all pretty value adding so I enjoyed classes very much and excelled as a result!
— If you’re not sure, simply ask around or check for reviews online 💕
✨ Pick something you think you like
— i did well in marketing because I was truly fascinated about marketing hehe 😉
4️⃣ 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲
✨ I think this part really helped me a lot; I ake 8am classes to force myself to wake up and study after.
✨ I tend to pack everything into 1-2 days, max 3 days so that I can prepare for class the rest of the week. Actually this was prob one of the significant changes I made to my life because it really drove my productivity level up 😜
And with that, that’s how I got to where I am today 😉 You can do it too!!! I really don’t think how smart you are contributes to whether you do well in school, maybe only to a small extent because I can tell you for sure that I’m wayyyyy more hardworking than smart. But I always try to carry the mindset that my best is enough and that it’s all going to be okay. You can do it, you! 💕 Hope this post is useful for you and do save it if it helps you 💕
