WANT TO BE A FASHION DESIGN STUDENT?

thought of becoming a fashion design student? as a FD student myself, here are some of my takeaways after 3 years.

1. CARRYING TONS OF STUFF TO AND FRO

during big projects, you would always be carrying big bags back home and to school almost everyday. at least for me, sometimes after lesson/my time in school i would want to bring home work to do and continue doing them at home. i would be bringing tons of fabrics/papers home. if you can't take the hassle and the weight of everything, i sometimes bring a luggage to school which can be quite excessive to some! but yes, it is physically tiring everyday.

2. HAVING NOT ENOUGH SLEEP

the amount of times i have not slept for submissions is mad. i'm always a zombie in school and taking short naps in class. you can forget about hanging out with friends often and partying every weekend. you will always be chasing deadlines and if you slack just for a day, you might be behind time. personally, it is also very difficult for me to meet-up and spend time with my partner. while grinding on my assignments, it makes me a bad texter and i am quite distant with a number of people because of that.

3. EXPENSIVE!

sourcing for fabrics, trims and sewing materials can be pretty expensive. fabrics like duchess satin are like $10/m and you would be need at least 2m for a simple garment. you can expect to spend up to 1k++ for one collection. little things like garment bags, sketchbook and hangers can add on to the cost. i would suggest saving up a sum of money before getting into this course just in case!

but in general, i definitely do not regret taking up fashion design! made genuine friends and after all that hard work, to see your final garments feels pretty good and satisfying. hands up if you want to be in fashion design and tell me why! let me know if you want some deets into the cheapest fabric shops in town as well ~
