back in 2018, i accidentally & very stupidly gave myself 2nd degree burns on the right side of my waist 🤡 i honestly wasn’t sure what to do, so in my panicked state, i briefly rinsed the burn w some normal temp water before sitting in front of a standing fan to cool the burning sensation.

it was about 15 min later when i realised that the burning feeling wasn’t dissipating that it hit me that it’s probs more serious than i thought … so that was when i called up a friend in first aid to ask for advice on what to do!! the scolding i got for not running my burn under running water for at least 5 min is smth i’ll nvr forget & it’s probs the reason why my burn ended up being as bad as it was …. so anyw pls take it from me & do note down what you should do if you burn yourself, & what to avoid at all costs!!!!

treating the burn (things to do ✅)

- SO SO IMPT but immediately cool the burned area preferably w cold water, otherwise room temp running water is good too!!

- be sure to do this for at least 5-10 mins!!

treating the burn (things NOT to do ❌)

- DO NOT at all costs apply ice, butter or toothpaste to the burn.

- ice can decrease blood circulation to the burn

- butter will slow down the release of the heat, causing more pain.

- toothpaste can also intensify the pain & increase the risk of infection & scaring.

protecting the burn (things to do ✅)

- if you are otw to seek medical treatment, DO wrap the burned area w cling wrap if the area is contact w your clothes.

- this is to prevent your clothes from sticking to the burn & tearing off the skin later on.

- also, it helps to reduce the risk of infection by keeping the burned area clean!

protecting the burn (things NOT to do ❌)

- if clothes or any jewellery are already stuck firmly to the burn, DO NOT remove them on your own or try to peel away the dead or blistered skin as you may make it worse. seek medical treatment instead!!

aftercare (things to do ✅)

- DO wear loose clothing to prevent contact with the burned areas.

- take painkillers for the pain when necessary.

- DO be consistent in applying medicine to the burned areas & keep the area clean, especially after blisters have popped naturally.

aftercare (things NOT to do ❌)

- DO NOT pop any blisters!! let them pop on their own naturally otherwise you’ll increase the risk of infection 😰

- DO NOT peel away at the dried skin as it’ll lead to more scarring!!

🍋 while burns may happen to us pretty frequently, it’s impt to note that they can be more serious than we think, so alw seek medical attention if you’re in doubt! hopefully my painful experience has been somewhat educational for all of you reading this, but may y’all never have to apply what you’ve learned here today 🤡
