Famous for amazing mobster movies and coma-inducing cooking, Little Italy is one of those New York City icons that endures long past its historical prime. This gorgeous neighborhood is part of the mythological nature of New York, and deservedly so, since many of the buildings here are the originals that the first Italian immigrants came to call home when moving here.
While stepping through this classic neighborhood brings you to a unique moment in New York’s past, it’s really the food here that makes this place so special. There are dozens of Italian restaurants and bakeries packed side by side as you walk down the streets and the choices can be overwhelming.
This is why I recommend sticking to the basics with dinner at Benito One followed by a cannoli from Ferrara Bakery. Benito One offers that mahogany-laiden, old school Italian atmosphere and large portions of quality food that really set it apart from some of the other, more touristy restaurants. Once you’re ready for dessert, the cannoli at Ferrara is as authentic as it gets, thanks to their sheep’s milk ricotta that provides a perfectly balanced sweetness to the crust of the cannoli.
