🇯🇵 1 Day Izu-Kogen Itinerary - day trip from Tokyo

During my recent trip to Japan, I did a day trip from Tokyo to Izu-Kogen.

It’s a super underrated and very scenic day trip which you can easily do from Tokyo. Here’s the itinerary I took:

🚆 09.00 - 11.06 Took the Ltd Exp Odoriko train from Tokyo to Izu Kogen (fully covered by the JR East Passes or the Tokyo Wide Pass). Sit on the left side - views of the coastline were gorgeous.

🚉 Kept our baggage in the station locker and bought a 1 day bus pass (800 yen) from the vending machine at the tourist centre.

🚌 11.44 - 12.05 Took the Bus from Izu Kogen Station to Mt Omuro.

🏔️ Mount Omuro

This is a 580m high active volcano shaped in a nice cone shape. We hopped onto the chair lift (700 yen return) which took us up to the top of the mountain. You can actually walk around the crater (takes about 30 min to walk a full round and take photos) and the views are super spectacular - Pacific Ocean on one side, and mountains on the other side.

🍴Lunch at Ohmuro Luncheonette

We had lunch at this cafe at the bottom of Mount Omuro, where we ordered a 3 course set lunch. Food was fresh, delicious and high quality.

🚌 13.48 - 14.14 Took the bus from Mt Omuro to Izukaiyo Park Bus Stop.

🏝️ Jogasaki Coast

Jogasaki has an extremely intricate coastline created by lava from Mt Omuro. It took us about 15-20 min to walk from the bus stop over to the coast. There’s a lighthouse where you could climb up and get a good view of the whole coastline, a suspension bridge and lots of stone formations. Super scenic place to visit.

🚌 15.35 to 15.43 Took the bus back to Izu Kogen Station.

🚉 We had 3 min to run to the lockers to retrieve our baggage and jump on the train. There are later trains but slower and not direct so we literally jumped off the bus the moment we arrived and rushed for it. Thankfully the station is small so we made it onto the train in time.

🚊 15.46 to 16.46 Took the Ltd Exp Odoriko to Odawara. This train actually goes all the way to Tokyo, but we stopped at Odawara (view post here) as we wanted to connect to Hakone (view post here) the next day.

Highly recommend going on this scenic day trip from Tokyo, or even exploring this as a multi-day trip in the Izu Peninsular.
