What is “female rage” in literature?

I recently came across this end cap in Barnes and Noble, and I was not only surprised at how many of these books I had read, but also that this is a whole literary genre!

So, what is the “female rage” category in books? In short, it is a female protagonist (often written by a female author) who engages in taboo or socially uncomfortable/unacceptable behavior or actions. The protagonists in these books epitomize that definition.

Have you read any of these? Full disclosure: I have not finished Supper Club yet…it may just not be the plot line for me at the moment, but the book is pretty good so far. The others pictured (My Year of Rest and Relaxation, Gone Girl and The Bell Jar) are all high on my list of favorites.
