Mac ‘n Cheese comes in many different shapes and varieties. While it may be thought of as a simple dish, there’s actually a lot to master. In my opinion, a great mac ‘n cheese uses a robust cheese blend, is thick, creamy, and has a crisp top. Here are 3 restaurants that get it right in NYC!
4 Charles Prime Rib is a small, charming steakhouse in the West Village with a reliably excellent menu. I’ve been here many times, and love their burger and lemon meringue pie. Their truffle mac ‘n cheese is also a must for me. It has a subtle but present truffle flavor, is creamy, rich, and has a nice crispy top. It’s listed as a side dish but is a large portion.
Waverly Inn in the West Village has an off-menu, highly expensive mac ‘n cheese topped with freshly shaved truffles. It’s everything you could want in the dish: it’s thick, rich, flavorful, and topped with a crunchy breadcrumb topping.
Hawksmoor NYC is a British steakhouse with excellent steaks, sides, and desserts (seriously, don’t skip out on this). Their mac ‘n cheese is my favorite on this list. It’s creamy, thick, rich, and bursting with flavor. The noodle itself is chewy, and I love the texture and flavor of the baked, buttery, bread crumb topping. It’s listed as a side dish and is a shareable portion.
