When I worked my sad beige corporate job in midtown, my one solace was knowing I could go to Kinokuniya whenever I wanted. For me it was a place of reprieve where I could escape the grind and wander through aisles of fun books and knickknacks! Even still this is one of my favorite places to go when I need time to kill before my train from grand central.
The store is a great blend of japanese and English language products from books to manga to stationary, thereโs something for everyone! As I was researching about the location, I learned that the midtown location is the companyโs flagship store and has the most variety of any location!
The first floor is all english language books. When you first walk in youโre greeted with rows and tables of newly released and best selling fiction. As you go further on youโll find coffee table books, cookbooks, travel books, childrenโs books, toys, and accessories! Up the escalator to the second floor is perhaps the most popular: Japanese and English manga. Iโm not a huge manga reader and have little concept of what is good or bad. But here it wouldnโt have mattered purely because there were so many shelves! I saw crowds of people, young and old, wandering through the shelves and marveling at the stock they had. Lastly in the basement is my personal favorite: stationary. I imagine that heaven looks something like the stationary section of Kinokuniya. They had imported Japanese stationary products from pens, pencils, and notebooks to cockroach shaped sandwich bag clips. It truly is a spectrum!
