🤔 #AdultingDiaries : Yes, the impossible happened for me back in June 2022. Perhaps it was the Asian mindset of ‘cannot quit unless you find a job first’, but I contemplated this decision for way too long before I pulled the trigger. And I was so glad I did. Here are 8 Questions I Asked Myself Before Quitting My Job with No Backup Plan 🚀Disclaimer: This is my own experience, please take this with a pinch of salt and DO NOT do anything to reckless!

1. Am I leaving this job because things aren’t going my way?

Oftentimes, we confuse the inability to adapt with frustration. Time will tell, right? Ask yourself whether your thoughts are based on temporary setbacks or genuine career dissatisfaction. Revisit the thought a few days later helps to evaluate whether it was a temporary feeling.

2. Can I afford to be unemployed for the next 3-12 months?

Financial security is important. I had no liabilities, loans or dependents, so no income only meant having to curb my spending religiously.

3. Are there no more solutions to fix my unhappy work situation?

I made sure to exhaust all solutions of fixing my situation before quitting. Since nothing much was done to change things, I knew dragging it out would just drag my frustration out.

4. Am I quitting to escape or genuine job unhappiness?

Soul searching is always important, even if it means a few last minute PTOs to get a break from work.

5. What am I going to do to fill my unemployed days?

Trust me, you don’t want to be just ‘waking up, eat, watch netflix and sleep’. It’s terribly boring. Make sure you have some goals to achieve such as working out more, volunteering, travelling etc.

6. What side hustles can I do to earn some extra income?

I explored various side gigs to ensure financial stability during this phase, especially affiliate programs. A little goes a long way!

7. Do I have a “deadline” when I will start finding a job again?

I set a clear timeline to job hunting after 1 month of taking a break because the reality is, securing a job takes months. It’s important to start early!

8. To travel and be more broke, or travel because YOLO?

I weighed the pros and cons of budget travel, considering the "You Only Live Once" spirit. I highly recommend living in the moment and making use of the break to really do what you want, because you never know when this break will come again.

And that’s the story of how I put in my 30-day notice, went unemployed for 3 months and spent more time with myself. Would I do it again? A bad job is like the lottery you never want to strike, but at least now I can say I wouldn’t hesitate that long before I do so 🌟
