HOW I GOT A UI/UX INTERNSHIP WITH 0 EXPERIENCE! 😳

After my 9to5 as a UI/UX intern in tourism post, I received MANY questions about how I landed the position so here’s a follow-up for my aspiring designers out there! 🥹🫶🏻 hehe

୨୧ 𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐈 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐀 𝐋𝐎𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐑 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄?

No - I only started my UX journey last year after taking some design thinking mods! But I knew it was my calling after developing a watch that could help the deaf “hear” (which was very fun and rewarding 🥰). While I HAVE NOT worked in UI/UX professionally, I have explored it in an academic and personal capacity!!

୨୧ 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐈 𝐏𝐔𝐓 𝐈𝐍 𝐌𝐘 𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐅𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐎?

I only highlighted 4 cases when I applied and all of them were assignments or personal case studies. I did not specifically gear them towards web/mobile design but they clearly showcased my step-by-step approach to problem-solving, from discovery to solution development and implementation.

୨୧ 𝐃𝐎 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐕𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐀𝐂𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐂 𝐐𝐔𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 (𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐆𝐍)?

Nope!! Some of my colleagues parachuted in from Business while I came from a comms bg! Imo, what they care about is your skills and how you think through problems. That said, I think job specifics do play a role. If the role leans more towards UI (graphic design), it would be good to include Photoshop or Illustrator in your resume ++ you have to at least be proficient in Figma!

୨୧ 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐈 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐃 𝐌𝐘 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏?

I applied through my school’s internship portal! But ik other coursemates who tried cold applying by mass sending their resumes to different companies through the company’s email or Linkedin.
