taking an adult gap year was one of the best decisions of my life, full stop.

now it's my mission to help people feel confident enough to take the leap and embark on their own gap year (or 6 months, or 3 months...whatever!)

of course, one of the biggest questions I receive is how we actually PAID for this experience. while everyone's situation is unique and people have different travel styles, here is how we did it:

1. SAVINGS - of course, this is the big one. we each saved $30k over the course of a few years with the intent of traveling/living solely off our savings.

2. INCOME - my husband ended up being able to work remotely (yay!), which meant he actually continued to make an income while we traveled. I wasn't so lucky with my job (I had to quit), but I also generated some side income through content creation. this meant we didn't need to use our savings as much as we intended to.

3. CREDIT CARD POINTS - we used travel credit cards to earn points that we used to ""purchase"" certain flights and hotel stays for FREE! this was a nice little bonus and I'll post more here about credit cards soon.

4. AIRBNB INCOME - we had a house, which meant we had a mortgage to pay while traveling. to make up some of those costs, we listed our house on Airbnb and I handled 90%+ of management remotely while my in-person manager at home handled the rest.

5. SELLING PERSONAL ITEMS - many people opt to sell things like clothes, furniture, etc. before a gap year trip. while we kept most things, I ended up selling my car at the last minute which gave us another $20k+ in savings to work with.

obviously our situation is unique, but hopefully this gives you an idea of how you can use different approaches to savings and income to help you on your own journey!
