I regret not getting my first credit card at 18. Now I wouldn’t advise that every 18 year old get a credit card, especially if you are a big spender, but at the very least I would recommend opening a card up and only paying for like Spotify with that card.
Cards are obviously great to show credit history in order to rent your first apartment or lease a vehicle. However, I never realized that I could make money on every day purchases with a credit card until I got one. Before, I used to just pay for my rent and groceries with my debit card. I’ve always been a big saver since I got my first job at 16, and rarely treat myself to new clothes or to dining out. Now I will use my credit card to pay for groceries while earning 3-5% cash back. Might as well get that small “discount” if it’s a purchase you’re already going to make! That’s why I say that some people should not get a card, since having a large credit line may be tempting to make unnecessary purchases.
1️⃣ Discover It Cashback for students
Can’t recommend this card enough for beginners. I want to make it clear that I do not have student loans, so that may impact your chance for approval.
My friend gave me a referral link that earned us both $50 as a statement credit when I opened my card! Earn 5% cash back on rotating categories… last month was on Apple Pay and gas stations and I earned the full $75 cash back for that category. I used Apple Pay for groceries and obviously needed gas every few weeks.
At the end of your first year, Discover matches your earned cash back so if you earned $150, you get another $150 back.
2️⃣ Capital One Savor One
To be honest, I mainly got this card to put groceries on it. I got a really low credit limit which is actually great for me since I don’t want to be tempted to use it for any other reason. Sometimes I won’t pay off my Discover card until the end of the month, but I like to pay off my Savor One card as soon as my purchase posts just since there’s a low credit limit.
I do plan on using it for trips, though. It comes with a complimentary UberOne membership, and I only use Uber/UberEats when I’m traveling. I also plan on buying NBA tickets with this card through the Capital One portal, so that would earn 8% cash back.
APPS
Download the apps for whatever cards you have, and get into the habit of checking it once every day or two days. I personally really love looking over my statements and seeing the rewards I get each month.
SoFi
If you have a regular savings account, meaning that your savings isn’t making 4.5% APY, then please open up a banking account with SoFi! Even if you only have $1,000 in savings you can make a good amount of money just by having this account. I also really like their credit score tool that allows you to simulate how certain decisions would impact your score.
Credit Karma
This is a given, but this is the first place I will check my credit score at when there are any changes. You can see how your score is in every ranking, and also get new credit card recommendations.
