we’ve all been there: we make a list of all the positive changes we’re gonna make in our lives. NOW is the moment we leave all the negative habits in the past! it works out well for a few days, maybe even a few weeks. but eventually, we slip back into old patterns. sustainable change is hard to crack!
the 🔑: knowing what you DON’T want is just as important as knowing what you DO!
sometimes when we’re trying to build healthy habits, we gloss over the unhealthy ones we already have. after all if we’re leaving them behind, why would they matter?
➡️ because you have the habits you have now for a REASON!
so when you try to form new habits without addressing the root causes of the ones you currently have, you can be unintentionally
(a) setting yourself up for failure
(b) avoiding the intimacy associated w change
ask yourself:
what unhealthy habits do you have?
what takes away from your peace?
what’s holding you back?
examples might be:
▪️ procrastinating
▪️ negative self talk
▪️ overthinking
▪️ going to bed late
▪️ eating right before bed
▪️ not drinking enough water
▪️ forgetting to eat
▪️ not taking time to rest
▪️ scrolling socials for hours
▪️ poor or nonexistent boundaries
the root causes of your unhealthy habits don’t go away just because you made a list of all the healthy habits you’re gonna start doing next week. why does that habit exist?
examples might be:
procrastinating ➡️ fear of failure
overthinking ➡️ uncertainty/fear
negative self talk ➡️ low self esteem
forgetting to eat ➡️ dissociated from your body
scrolling for hours ➡️ avoiding problems
not taking time to rest ➡️ anxiety/hypervigilence
poor/nonexistent boundaries ➡️ low self respect
once you understand the underlying cause, you can address it! and THAT’S what allows healthy habits to actually stick!
“finish that project” is empty without understanding and addressing the procrastination that’s led us to have that project on our to-do list for wayyy too long.
“stop doom scrolling” is empty without understanding and addressing the anxiety and uncertainty that makes us want to lose ourselves in our phones.
“set better boundaries” is empty without understanding and addressing the childhood trauma that led you to believe you’re not worthy of respect and consideration
