Salary Transparency in Higher Education

Job 1: Campus Life Coordinator- I had just graduated with my Master of Social Work degree and got my first job at a small private university for $37,500.

Job 2- Director of Campus Life- I was promoted in 5 months and bumped up in title and pay to $46,000.

Job 3- Director of Counseling and Wellness- After a year and a half I made a lateral move to provide therapy for college students. I still worked at the same institution but finally got to utilize my degree and was bumped up again to $53,000. I did have to pay for my own licensure supervision though so it was more realistically $51,000.

Job 4- Student Support Specialist- This is my first job at a new institution but I will be doing therapy for college students as well as creating wellness programs for them. This will be at a public institution and the salary will be $72,000.

Tips- working in higher education requires you to change institutions every few years in order to increase your salary and truly earn what you are worth. At my old institution I was the Director level and couldn’t reach any higher, so I was maxed out at 53k.

Don’t feel guilty for leaving in order to find a place that will pay you what you are worth. Pour into your current job and position, but keep your resume up to date and open to new opportunities! #salary #transparency #newjob #therapist #therapistsoflemon8
