Solo travelling Shanghai

Is it me, or Shanghai is so so fun?!

Just got back from my 5N4D solo trip to Shanghai and I loved it so much 💛

The staff at all the bars, eateries and restaurants I visited were super friendly 💯

✈️ 𝐅𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:

T͟O͟ ͟S͟H͟A͟N͟G͟H͟A͟I:

Flew with China Eastern Airlines and booked a red-eye flight to maximise my first day in Shanghai.

Arrived in Shanghai around 4am and cleared immigration by around 5am. Since the train and maglev were not yet available, I booked a Didi 🚖 to the hotel.

T͟O͟ ͟S͟G͟:

Took a train to 🚇 龙阳路 and exit the station >> transfer to maglev (I bought my tix on the spot for 50 RMB) >> PVG >> SG

🏨 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:

Stayed at Conrad Shanghai near 🚇 人民广场 bc it's very central.

As a solo traveller, I prefer to stay at international hotels bc I feel they’re more reputable and somewhat safer. Booked my accomm directly on the hotel website since it was cheaper and I could earn Hilton Honors points.

– 南京东路 >> 外滩 (day view & light up of the bund at around 7pm in summer) >> 豫园 & 城隍庙(night view)

– 陆家嘴 >> 东方明珠 >> 浦东美术馆 (sunset view & light up of 南京东路 at 7pm in summer)

🥢 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝:

Shanghainese palate is on the sweeter side, and they’re famous for 小笼包，生煎包，面食，蟹黄面/饭。

Here’s what I tried:

I’ve a hearty appetite, so I was able to order and try several dishes at each place. If you have a smaller appetite, I reco ordering just 1 or 2 dishes for 1 pax.

🍸 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐬:

Only managed to check off 4 bars on my itinerary and they’re all fantastic. Cocktails were super on point and service were also great. Will share more in another post.

Loved their espresso, which tasted like wine, so good!

– O.P.S. Cafe ⭐️ 🚇 嘉善:

Enjoyed their “The Season: Danche”. Initially put off by the foam, thinking it was made of milk, but pleasantly surprised to find it was melon foam made from egg whites.

Both 3 1/2 and O.P.S. Cafe have the same owner and are located close to each other, though quite a walk from 🚇 嘉善.

🫖 𝐓𝐞𝐚:

I'm crazy about tea, so I went all out at these two places I happened to stumble upon, bought a couple of boxes of tea from each.

- 哈茶福 ⭐️ 🚇 南京东路:

Very fragrant tea, and I love their calligraphy decor and takeaway cup.

- Teastone ⭐️ 🚇 新天地:

Found this place while waiting for my 阿嬷手作. They have an extensive range of tea selections and you can enjoy your tea in store.

🧋𝐁𝐁𝐓:

– 阿嬷手作 ⭐️ 🚇 新天地:

Went to the 新天地 outlet. Queued for over an hour on a weekday afternoon. Enjoyed their fruit tea!

– Charlietown 红茶公司 ⭐️ 🚇 静安寺:

Visited the outlet near 静安寺. Their teas are quite good.

Caveat: I drink bbt without sugar and milk (unless there’s oat milk), so I can’t comment on milk, froth or sweetness.

P.S.: Those with ⭐️ are highly recommended!

📸 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨-𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠:

Since I'm traveling alone, I asked strangers to take photos of me and offered to take their photos in return.

Alternatively, you can bring a selfie stick and use the iPhone w Apple Watch or Oppo N3 Flip w timer to take photos.

Most of my photos taken at The Bund (1st photo) were taken by a 约拍 photographer recommended by someone I met at a xlb restaurant.

Booked her for 2 hours at The Bund on a weekend. She shot w a Fujifilm, which was a key reason why I went w her (I’m a big Fujifilm fan #富家子弟 🤭)

In this post, photos were taken either on my iPhone 14 PM or Oppo N3 Flip.
