Being an AuDHD human, I get burnt out from careers fairly easily. As a result, I’ve had MANY jobs from the time I started working as a teen. Some people/employers may see this as a negative, but honestly, I love that I’ve been able to try careers in so many different industries. I feel like it’s given me a lot of perspective and empathy, and definitely helped me realize what careers are good long term options for me. And most importantly, it’s what allowed me to go from making $7.75/hr to $27/hr (pretty good, not amazing in my area).
So, starting at the top:
Owning my baby boutique was one of the most rewarding and empowering things I’ve ever done with my life. The good: freedom to make all creative and business decisions, set my own schedule, and being able to deliver beautiful products to my customers. The bad: owning a business in a small town, in a shit economy. Had to close, but hope to reopen soon, as I own my building.
I love waitressing. Good: it’s an ADHD dream for me- hyperfixating on getting orders right, being able to socialize, burning energy, working under pressure. Bad: small town and elderly customers = shit tips.
Insurance. I’ve been in this industry since 2017, and it’s a crazy industry. Good: so many career growth opportunities (I started as a glorified receptionist at a local agency, then built up to an office manager before swapping to the claims side of things). Bad: having to deliver bad news to insureds (rate increases, claims not being covered), and the devastation insureds face when they have a loss.
Working at a funeral supply company was actually super interesting! Good: building relationships with and hearing wild stories from funeral directors all over the country. Bad: my employer wasn’t great, and it’s not for the squeamish.
Dominos- good: free pizza, kept my body and mind occupied/active. Bad: I never want to eat Dominos again, because I always smelled like pizza, arrogant drivers who wouldn’t help during rushes (pizzas falling out of the oven onto the floor).
Being a cleaner was a mixed bag. Good: setting my own schedule, set my own pay, making a major impact in the life of clients. Bad: people are disgusting, and clients can have very unrealistic expectations for how quickly you can clean a home that hasn’t been deep cleaned recently.
Furniture store. Good: cool sales people, discounts. Bad: not being able to control lead times on furniture and parts, horrendous employer.
I loved working in a call center.. until I didn’t. Good: worked my way up to leadership quickly, was interesting. Bad: my leadership didn’t understand that you can’t help 10 people via chat at the same time, and collection agency accounts 🤮
Aaaand the worst: making hospital drapes. Good: the little old ladies I worked with were adorable. Bad: literally everything else. These machines are fast and finicky, and I barely got any training. I faked swine flu and then quit 🤣
How many jobs have you had? What was your fav?
