Why I’ll Never Do Yoga Again

As a former yoga teacher, I QUIT yoga cold turkey. Here’s why:

I used to view yoga as a fun workout. I loved hot vinyasa to workout, stretch, and sweat. I practiced for a couple years before deciding to become a teacher.

During my teacher training and beyond when I began to teach and really immerse myself in yoga culture, I discovered aspects that I didn’t resonate with. Yoga is a very spiritual form of activity! The moves themselves are steeped in hindu culture and religion, and many of the chants are designed to open up spiritual portals for different energies/deities. As a Christian, this stopped being a good fit for me at a certain point.

While I’ll never judge anyone for whether or not they participate in yoga, I personally stopped resonating with it. I actually taught for 6 years before finally quitting! I got to a point where I just wanted my workouts to be fitness. I felt fake teaching something I didn’t really believe in and found myself really uncomfortable in my place of work.

I love lifting and pilates now and my favorite thing is that my workout is JUST a workout. I personally don’t want any energetic/spiritual practice in my workouts! I’m just here to sweat, build muscle, and have a good time.
