Day 4

I have been in the veterinary field since 2018.

My dream since I was little was to be a veterinarian👩🏽‍⚕️🐶

So to gain experience I worked at a doggy daycare and then eventually I landed a job at a veterinary clinic as a kennel attendant. The clinic wasn’t giving me the opportunities to grow - no matter how many times I asked! Stuck around for two years just to be told “we’ll train you how to do xyz tomorrow” 🙄

After two years at a state college I decided to apply to a vet tech program and got in. By the time I started the program, my flame was already dim. I realized I didn’t want to be a veterinarian or a vet tech. Veterinarians deal with so much crap mentally and emotionally and are not compensated for it. Vet techs literally make boo boo money (which I knew beforehand but it was ,at the time, my passion & my mom literally almost slit my throat when I applied because she knew RVTS don’t make great money. But it was for me to decide & for me figure to out).

Anyways, I eventually dropped out of the vet tech program and decided to pursue my bachelors again.

I continued as a vet assistant because I still loved working with animals & it was easy to get jobs in something that I had experience in🙂‍↕️

I tried applying to entry level jobs at Kaiser, Sutter, private clinics. No one would bother to interview me. Even though I was basically a scribe/ pharmacy tech/ receptionist/ phlebotomist/anesthesiologist etc 😪

Fast forward to now: I finally got a job at an imaging clinic and will be applying to my plan b: radiology technology school!!!

Oh yeah and I’m graduating with my BS in December 🥳

I’m feeling sad that I wont be working with animals anymore-especially doing blood draws 😫 they’re so much fun. But I’m excited for my new beginnings.

The main takeaway? It’s okay to change your mind or career plans. It might take time, but there’s no right or wrong way to figure out what you want to do. I found my path later on, after exploring different options and learning more about myself. Deciding on a career right out of high school can be too soon; it’s fine to take your time and find what really fits you.

This is not to say that the vet field is terrible. It takes special people to join & pursue. They’re the most compassionate people ever and do what they do because they genuinely LOVE their job. I am blessed to have worked in the field for as long as I have. I am the person I am today because of it 🩷
