3 Things That Helped Me Get Sober

1) READ “Quit Like A Woman” by Holly Whitaker

This book will make you laugh while radically shifting your perspective on what alcohol is. Holly helps you realize that everything society has taught us about

alcohol is bullsh*t. She helps you see that we live in a society that romanticizes alcohol, but you don’t need to fall for those outdated stories anymore. It also is very helpful for a feminine approach to recovery as opposed to popular masculine approaches like AA. Reading this book made me excited to claim that I was sober, rather than being embarrassed by it.

2) BELIEVE In Yourself

I tried to stop drinking so many times but I never fully believed I could do it. Once I allowed myself to imagine myself free from alcohol, I became obsessed with how amazing life could get. The more I thought about this possibility, the more I wanted to make it become my reality. And I slowly believed I could. Self belief is the #1 magic ingredient in any change a person decides to make.

3) JOURNAL Your Emotions

We often use substances to deal with some sort of emotional discomfort. I realized a lot of my drinking was trying to numb and hide my social anxiety + depression. I had to start facing my emotions and my journal was a very safe place to do it. My journal became a form of therapy for me to process everything that was happening in my life. Since emotions don’t stop once you get sober, it’s been a good habit that has kept me grounded instead of wanting to reach for a drink again.
