The journey begins with earning a bachelor's degree, followed by completing medical school to obtain an M.D. or D.O. degree. Afterward, psychiatrists must complete a four-year residency in psychiatry, where they gain hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders, which is training you do as a physician. Finally, you must pass a board certification exam to become a board certified psychiatrist.
