You know it’s really very hot when many people on the street are using umbrellas while walking under the hot sun.

When I was in Kyoto and Osaka in early August, temperature had reached around 38 or 39 degrees Celcius, which was much warmer than what we had ever experienced in Singapore and Malaysia!

Even when standing under shelter, the air was very warm and humid.

While walking under the sun, you just wish to quickly get to places with super strong air-conditioner.

Here are some tips on how to make your summer trip to Japan more bearable so you can enjoy better.

1. Plan to go to outdoors as early as possible. Around 8 am to 9 am, it’s not too hot yet. Hottest timing is 11 am to 4 pm.

2. Plan for indoors activities during the hottest times, such as going to shopping malls, visiting cafes, or go to the museums.

3. Remember to use sunblock lotion. You can buy it from Don Quijote, convenience stores or drugstores.

4. Saw at Daiso, there are shields for top of your head to reflect off the heat.

5. You can also get arm sleeves or gloves to protect your arms and hands.

6. Wear a hat to protect your scalp and face.

7. Use umbrella even when the sun doesn’t look that strong.

8. Carry along handheld rechargeable fan. Otherwise, bring a manual paper fan to fan yourself.

9. Drink lots of water.

So for myself, I would bring umbrella, hat and handheld fan when I go out. When it’s sunny, I would use the umbrella. Then when I need to take photographs / videos and don’t have enough hand to hold umbrella, I would wear my hat. Sometimes even with umbrella, the hot air is still unbearable so would need to use handheld fan. And if it’s warm at indoor areas without strong air-conditioner, would need to use the handheld fan too.

And definitely would need to re-apply sunblock during noon time.
