After seeing so many posts on Lemon8 detailing financial achievements such as saving $100k by a certain date, I was inspired to write this post on my financial regrets.
I was very careless with my money in my teenage and early to mid 20s, spending on so many things needlessly.
I write this as a reminder to myself as well as a note to anyone who might be tempted to make the same mistakes as I did.
Here’s everything I regret spending on:
1. Expensive hair cuts/perms
Last week I went to a TikTok viral hair salon and unfortunately had such a poor experience. I paid $60 for my hair to be butchered 😭
I remember admiring my hair before the hair cut, wondering to myself whether I made the right decision.
Now, my fringe is awkwardly short - I can’t tuck a particular strand behind my ear 😫 That strand of fringe now gets extra oily thanks to me constantly trying to tuck it behind my ear 🤢
Apart from hair cuts, I’ve also wasted money on getting my hair permed… only for my perm to disappear after 1-2 weeks, leaving me with frizzy and tangled up hair and a hole in my pocket 🤡
I’ve spent over $400 on three perms that did not last. If your hair is like mine - super straight and fine, you’re not suited for a perm no matter which hair salon you visit…
Ultimately, don’t be deceived by all the Instagram or TikTok videos of beautiful bouncy curly hair - it’s only temporary as the perm/blow out will disappear. Hair is hair, it’ll grow out and change.
2. Too much makeup, skincare and fragrances
I have way too much makeup and skincare - 6-7 foundation bottles, 4-5 different blushes, 5-6 different lip products, 4-5 different moisturisers. The list goes on and on 🙈🙂↔️
Looking back, I shouldn’t have bought into the hype of certain products.
There is no reason why I should have been purchasing (a) so many products that are basically the same thing but in a different packaging or (b) products that I don’t even need or use.
For example, I was swayed by all the hype about the Estée Lauder foundation. I caved in and bought it. After using it once or twice, I’ve not touched it - it’s a nope from me 👎
It dries down very fast and leaves my skin looking patchy. My matte espoir foundation from Korea is just as good 😳
Also, if I could turn back time, I would have also skipped out on buying western makeup brands, instead opting for Korean brands.
There’s no reason why I splurged >$50 per product on makeup products like the Hourglass blush, Dior Lip Oil, or the Rare Beauty blush 😳
I’m not some model or influencer who relies on my looks for my job. I’m pretty sure no one can tell what foundation, blush or lip product I’m using 🙃
Another example, did I really need the d’Abla first spray serum?
I live in Singapore which is so humid… plus my face tends to get oily, why did I buy a spray that essentially sprays water and oil on my face?? 🙈🤡😖
I ought to have done more research into what I was buying… I didn’t even do a simple google search 🤡🤡
3. Expensive clothes
When I was in my teenage years and early to mid 20s, I splurged a lot on branded clothes - Sandro, Maje, Brandy Melville, Caramel Monster, Enza Costa, For Love & Lemons, so on and so forth.
Each piece of clothing I purchased was >$50, mostly around $100 per piece. I would also splurge on two or three dresses from Sandro and Maje, with one going up to $500 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
I also tailored 2 cowl neckline tops from Accent - where each was $150?? 😨 WHY DID I NEED THAT?
Although I did make good money, it honestly doesn’t make sense financially 😖😖
Why did I need 4-6 Caramel Monster dresses??? I don’t even wear most of them as most of them are so body hugging 🤡
A lot of clothes I purchase on Taobao and Shopee are comparable - especially dupes for Brandy Melville. I will do a post on this one day!
4. Pricey food almost everyday without any special occasion
In line with my terrible spending habits on clothes, I also spent quite recklessly on food.
My ex boyfriend and I would eat at fancy places almost every night even though there was absolutely no special occasion… 💸💸💸
We were regulars at Yakiniku Don-Don, Public Izakaya, Gyu-Kaku, Batten-Yokatoh, Sanpotei, Blue Label Pizza, the Pasta Bar, Imperial Treasure, Beauty in the Pot, Hai Di Lao, Tsukada Nojo, Cicheti and many more restaurants 😢😭
Whilst we could certainly afford it and yes it was all very yummy, I don’t think it was such a wise financial decision in retrospect. There’s nothing wrong with simple meals - sometimes they taste even better. Food is just food - you eat it and then it disappears.
As a result of these mistakes, I couldn’t save up as much as I ought to have. I am further away from my financial goals and I have way less savings than many others (even people who earn half as much)…
