I'm turning 27 this year, and in the 3 years I've been working, I've been in 4 jobs.
as a disclaimer, I acknowledge how great my luck has been with job hunting and hopping. I'm seriously thankful.
for starters, I graduated from Chemistry in 2021. it was COVID season, and I joined anything that would hire me. I was a QC chemist at a COVID related start-up. before I knew it, in 6 months, I was retrenched.
I was unemployed for 2 months before I found another job. this time in Biotech. I didn't know what I was getting into when I signed the contract, but I was desperate. somehow, I grew to love the job. something about Biotech was soooo much more fun than chemistry, and I knew deep down this was where I wanted to be. I grew tremendously in this job - from being a small fry not knowing the basics of cell culturing or using a BSC, I picked up bigger responsibilities. I wasn't really looking for a next job, but I knew I wanted out at some point because my salary has been stagnant. even so, I wasn't actively looking.
I got offered my next job. they offered me a rly good amount, and I was bumped up more than $500 from my previous job. so I took it. this job didn't really have good benefits aside from rly good increments. in the 11 months I've been in this job, I've gotten another increment of more than $500.
I'm currently on a break before joining my next company, which is offering me another more than $500 increment. I am very tired of job hopping because I honestly don't sit well with change, but my salary increments have been so great, and I've learnt a whole deal of skills simply from job hopping. I've also met different people and learnt how to work with people of different quirks. I feel like job hopping at this stage of my life was truly necessary, because I had a steep learning curve & my responsibilities increased a good amount, enough for me to say I am confident of where I stand in my field of work.
(edit: I would like to add that I only jump when two conditions are met - the new company gives me a higher position/another role I'm interested in, and an increment)
tldr
💫 steep learning curve, ideal for those starting out in the workforce and have little financial commitments
💫 expanded network in the industry
💫 contrary to popular belief, a lot of the companies I look at have a turnover rate of 1.5 to 2 years, meaning it's ok to jump jobs
💫 great salary bumps
💫 ability to try out different positions and find out what you like before you settle for something long-term
🚫 quite tiring to keep jumping jobs
🚫 might rub some people the wrong way
