Fraternal twins are also called “ Di/Di” or “dichorionic-diamniotic twins”

This means each baby has its own placenta and its own sac.

These twins are also often referred to as the “sibling twins”.

In the case of DIDI twins, this is the only type of twin that is genetic.

Did you know that the mom has to carry the twin gene? This is because we have to release more than one egg during an ovulation window in order for this form of twin to form.

The other types of twins are not genetic. They happen from the splitting of one egg.

When you go for your first appointment and you find out you’re having twins. You’ll get an influx of information from your physician. Don’t stress out. You’ll see your doctor PLENTY during your pregnancy. You can always ask for refreshers.

Twin pregnancy is always listed as “high risk” even if you have zero issues, no prior health problems, you’re not older, not over weight. It doesn’t matter. You’ll likely see a high risk doctor (maternal fetal medicine) and you get sooo many extra ultrasounds!

Until i began my high risk appts at 20 weeks I had an ultra sound every visit with my OB. Once I began seeing high risk they handled all ultrasounds. These ultrasounds last ALOT longer than a typical sneak peak at baby.

By 24 weeks you are usually the size of most women at 40 weeks. This is because you have extra amniotic fluid, you have two entire placentas, and TWO ENTIRE HUMANS growing in you.

You’ll likely know which baby is where and will be able to tell who is kicking and when. It’s this weird mom instinct!

Just because you’re pregnant with twins don’t think you HAVE to have a c-section. Vaginal births are possible with twins. A lot depends on your baby A’s(the lower baby’s) position. If they are head down. You have a better chance. If they are breech? Vaginal isn’t an option at that point usually.

There’s of course risks that come with twins. Premature birth, low birth weight, delivery complications, etc. but with the right care from your team a lot can be monitored and hopefully prevented!
