How to choose the perfect wedding date?

When I first started planning my wedding, like many other brides, I was eager to find my dream wedding venue, photographer, and makeup artist. I started messaging vendors to ask for quotes. However, the first question they always asked was, "When is your wedding date?"

If you haven't finalized your wedding date and can only give a vague answer like "around October 2024" or "some time in the first half of 2025,", most popular and busy vendors won't even bother to reply 🤣 Once you have a confirmed date, then only you can proceed with all the other inquiries! So, friends, don't waste your time on other things. Sort out the date first!

Choosing a wedding date can be quite complicated. The most detailed and accurate way is to consult a ✨Fengshui master✨ to calculate an auspicious date. They can calculate not only the date but also the exact time for every ritual, such as the betrothal ceremony, tea ceremony, and prayer to ancestor. They will guide you through every step. This is especially useful if your parents are very traditional. However, it can be expensive, and you might not know which master to choose. Plus, if the master's suggested procedures are too complicated or not what you want, you might feel stuck because you've already paid them and feel very wasted if you don;t follow what they say🥲

For those who don't want to go through all that, and still want to find an auspicious date (from Chinese perspective), the simplest method is to use a ✨perpetual calendar （万年历）✨ Find a day that is suitable for weddings, and avoid clashing with the zodiac signs of the bride and groom. Then, choose an auspicious time for that day. I used this method to choose date of my ROM and betrothal ceremony. You can find perpetual calendars online, but I prefer using the physical ones at home.

If you think using a perpetual calendar is too casual, you can also choose your date with a ✨Chinese almanac (通书)✨ I asked my uncle to help me with this, and he used our birthdates for the calculations. I've also heard of apps that can do this. You might want to search for them. I used the almanac to determine the dates for both my Singapore and Johor weddings, but I used the perpetual calendar to find the auspicious time.

My approach might not be the most accurate, but it's a compromise that balances tradition and practicality. You can decide how to choose your wedding date based on your own and your family's preferences, but don't delay it for too long. Otherwise, it will affect your overall wedding planning progress.
