I've been on back-to-back business flights this month and I realised that the model of your plane is SO important when booking business class. here's my business experience and what you need to know 👇🏻

1. Lounge

I'm sure if you're taking business, you'll get the visit the super lovely business class lounge. if you ever visit the first class lounge, I highly recommend the prawn noodles, prata and chwee kueh! The chwee kueh is soooo soft and smooth, its ridiculous. They have wifi, showers, sleeper beds, the cleanest and nicest (and empty/quiet) toilets, all types of juices, teas, alcohol! I usually don't leave the lounge until its time to board cos they just have everything you need.

2. Seats & bed

ALL business class seats (save for the extra short haul flights) are able to be made into a flat bed. BUT there's a difference in the beds. I've taken several different business flights on A350-900s and Boeing 777-300ER, and they DIFFER. Even if its the same model of plane, the seats can still be different. I'm not an expert on planes, but I'm guessing it has to do with the age/year of the plane, than the model of the plane. So it’s really a luck thing I guess. On my flight to/fro Shanghai, I took the A350-900 there and 777-300ER back, and both had the same type of seats (see p1-4). Then weeks later on my trip to Tokyo, I took the 777-300ER to/fro and it was a different type of seat (p6-8). I was SO disappointed!

The one to Shanghai had such a big TV screen, lots of mini cabinets (one beside the seat, and one beside the TV screen, see p1-2) so that things won't just fall out. Although the bed had to be fixed by the air crew which made it slightly more inconvenient, it felt much more comfortable and wider.

Meanwhile the flight to/fro Tokyo had this BULBOUS fixture next to the screen, making the TV screen so much smaller. There were less cabinets, and more of just... empty door-less "spaces" for you to slot your things in. The bed can be set up by yourself which is much more convenient, BUT it doesnt "connect" properly. It tends to bend downwards, probably due to a lack of support underneath (p8). Which leaves a gap around my knee area, and it is such an awkward area to not have supported especially cos I'm very prone to knee pain. So I wasn't able to sleep very well at all.

So yeah.. Is it a game of luck? Whelp 😮‍💨

3. Food on board

did you know that other than the meal choices on board, there is also an option to "book the cook"? Unfortunately, I haven't heard good reviews from my family members, so I've never bothered trying 😭 the only good thing about it is that you're guaranteed to get the meal you want! I've had times where the meal I wanted was all out, which is sucky. Another thing to note is that you can't have your meal served at a later time. Occasionally I'm so tired and really wanna rest first before eating, since I feel that they tend to serve meals at really awkward timings. But they explained that they chose the safest times to serve meals, aka where the least amount of turbulence is predicted. And with the amount of glassware they use for business class? Yeahhhh we should definitely be having our meals at the safest times possible!

Also, I LOVE the breadsticks and this particular bread with cheese on it. I highly recommend trying out those when they're bringing the bread basket around! For the mains, I love the hokkien mee and the fried beehoon in p4. If you ever see this red bean and injeolmi ice cream in p10, you need to try it! Apparently the ondeh-ondeh is super good too!

4. Wifi

if you've been on Singapore Air recently, you may know that wifi is now complimentary on board for first/business class passengers and also krisflyer members! Of course, wifi isn't the smoothest but hey. how can we complain when it's free? 🤭

5. Amenities

Usually you'll see slippers and socks right at your seat when you board, but in the case that it isn't, make sure to ask for it! I'm sure you don't want to be wearing your own shoes/socks for the whole flight. Also, the noise cancelling headphones provided? No more uncomfy earbuds stuffed into your ears for the whole flight! A pillow and blanket, the usuals, are always provided. But I highly recommend bringing a small inflatable pillow to sleep on! The pillow they provide is kinda toooo soft to be used as a pillow on a bed. Of course, that's unless you're okay with soft pillows!

6. Difference with First Class

Honestly, I don’t feel a difference between business and first. Other than the privacy and the food/wine menu, since there’s much less passengers in first. Unless you’re super picky about plane food and your alcohol, there’s probably no need for first class! To me, plane food is gonna be plane food. I’m really just here for the flat bed so that I can rest comfortably! Everything else is unnecessary to me 😶 Unless you’re considering Suites, then that’s a different consideration. It’ll be amazing for a once in a lifetime chance for sure!

I hope this helps prepare you for your business class experience! Its truly such a private and comfortable experience. As someone with acrophobia and flight anxiety, business class helps me A LOT because it makes me feel so comfortable and "covered" because of the high walls of the seats. The seats also feel much more stable than economy, which helps soothes my flight anxiety slightly since the seats don’t feel so “shaky” iykwim. If you have the same issues, I do recommend trying out business class at least once in your lifetime! The difference is HUGE (unfortunately for me 😭)
