books thicker than a bowl of oatmeal

Sometimes you just need a good ole 700-page book to keep you company, right???

Right!!! As much as I love short books, my heart belongs to thick ones <3 I love staying in one world for a while, and really taking my time and staying engrossed in one long story. It’s like binge watching one television series over the course of weeks (or a weekend 👀).

Are almost all of these recommendations fantasy novels? Yes…and? 🤨 Did I lure you into reading multiple series by adding multiple book ones? Yes! I’m an avid series reader, sue me. 🤭

If you do want a standalone (that also isn’t fantasy) try 11/22/63 or The Goldfinch! 11/22/63 is a sci-fi historical fiction thriller about a man trying to stop the assassination of JFK, and The Goldfinch is an artsy angsty literary fiction novel written by the mother of dark academia herself. (One could argue the founder of dark academia is Oscar Wilde…but that’s another topic for another time.)

My personal, top of the list, five star reading experience recommendation is The Shadow of What was Lost, so if you only choose one of these choose this!! This is book one of The Licanius Trilogy and it is one of the most underrated fantasy series that deserves so much more love. It has sci-fi elements like time-manipulation fights and paradoxes and pocket dimensions that help give a fresh spin on the classic taking-a-powerful-object-on-a-perilous-journey fantasy plot.
