tldr: less than $10,000
hello friends!! i’m a gen z small-business owner coming from a humble background and i’m here to expose my costs to my competitors yeehaw 🤠📈
opening bhabie’s market was a HUGE risk, i had approximately $10k to spend and no full-time job to fall back on 🥲 live laugh life is all about risks, NO🙅♀️ RAGRETS🥀⛓️
anyways, here’s the full cost breakdown of opening bhabie’s market ✨
✩ slide 2: legal stuff
my business was already registered with ACRA in 2021 so technically i didn’t had to fork out any money for this part 🙏 once i found a physical space to rent, i signed a two years lease which started in september 2022
✩ slide 3: renovation
i was LUCKY enough to find a unit that didn’t need any renovation at all! the only thing i had to do was cover up the windows (since it was blocked by the signboard outside) and order an acrylic signage for my storefront 🙌 rest of the installation (like drilling walls, assembling furniture) was done by my dad, my boyfriend and me 😎
✩ slide 4: furniture
i already had some IKEA 🇸🇪 furniture and decor so i just brought them over to the store. the rest of my furniture is from shopee~ i would’ve saved more money if i ordered from taobao instead but i’m malay and was NOT willing to converse with google translate 👍
✩ slide 5: inventory 📦
muahaha i actually underestimated how many clothes could fit on 1 rack and under-ordered for my store’s grand opening… truly unprepared (but then again, that was all i could afford) 😵💫 my shopping bags were plant based bags called telobags!
✩ slide 6: miscellaneous
the real MVP of cost saving was my hotspot router!! wifi for retail spaces is EXPENSIVE and there’s a lead time to setup the wifi 💀 wifi is a MUST since CCTV’s need them to operate! the remaining money i had leftover was spent on decor 🪴
✩ slide 7: things i already had
for cashiering, i used the SGQR label i got when i opened my business bank account for QR code payments. i didn’t think it was necessary to have a pos system for paywave/nets payment methods. i even used my personal ipad to record sales and transactions 😗
my store was far from perfect when i opened, lots of additions and improvements were made after i broke-even a couple months later!! word of advice, whatever project you wish to start, just do it at your own pace and trust the process 🫶
read about my one year experience here 🥳
