My cyst turned out to be something else

I first had this bump on my face which didn’t go away after 1-2 months. Finally decided I should go see doctor about it. I was diagnosed with sebaceous cyst which requires surgical intervention and was referred to the Plastic surgeon.

When I first see the doctor, he gave me a steroid jab to see if the bump goes away. Which it did… but it also quickly came back within a week. I went back to the doctor again and he immediately hook me up on the IV drip and cut me up. Everything happened very quickly and in quite a mess with so many nurses in the room. Doctor showed me all the pus in it and sent them for culture test. After the surgery, I had to go back to the hospital everyday to change my dressing.

A few weeks later, I received a call from the nurse saying that the culture test came back positive and the doctor needs to speak to me. It seems very serious and I logged in the health buddy to see my report. Googled the bacteria name and got the shock of my life. This bacteria is very hardy and requires long term antibiotics -think 1 year of med. Anyway you can google Mycobacterium Abscessus and see for yourself.

I was referred to an Infectious Disease specialist and he couldn’t explain how I got this from since I did not have any facial procedure done. Anyway long story short, I managed to avoid the long term oral medication and currently on a wait and see approach. My surgeon did a good job in cleaning up the infected area so I’m praying that the bump doesn’t come back again. 🥲
