Trust me, you’re going to want to read this.

If you’re a job seeker, or if you’re currently working for someone, here are some ways YOU can spot for red flags in a company and WHY you should be AWARE of them:

1️⃣ READ GLASSDOOR REVIEWS

Before you sign a confirmation offer in a company, do your research and look through Glassdoor reviews thoroughly. If there are bad reviews, read through them and try to note down what are the common pain points that people have stated. Yes, they may have been left by disgruntled ex employees, but honestly, if there’s A LOT of bad reviews, it’s a super huge red flag tbh. 🚩 No employees will spare that much energy unless they have a valid reason and the strong hateful will to post it on Glassdoor. So make sure YOU KNOW what you’re signing up for BEFORE signing the letter of offer.

2️⃣ LOOK THROUGH PAST EMPLOYEE’S LINKEDIN

MAKE SURE to look through past employees (and current ones) LinkedIn and check how the turnover rate is like. If the previous person for the role you’re applying at has only been with the company for less than a year before quitting, try looking at their past history to see if they’re job hoppers or is there a reason why they’re leaving. A company with HIGH turnover rates is a HUGE RED FLAG bcos there is no LOYALTY in the staff and obviously there’s a reason why they’re leaving. Which leads me to my next point…

‼️This is optional, but if you want to (and have the guts to), send a LinkedIn message to past employees to ask how their experience is like in the company/how the management is like or how the culture is like. There’s no harm asking, but it’s also a risk because there is a possibility they might tell the company you asked about them. But hey, do the research that you need to, but do this only if you’re very curious to find out from them about the job. Personally I did not do this because I’m too cowardly. But looking back I SHOULD HAVE DONE SO…‼️

3️⃣ OBSERVE & MONITOR

If you’re new to the company and you’re curious about your job, you should observe how the current employees react and behave in the company. There are many telltale signs based on their actions and behaviors in the company.

🚩 If most of the employees lose the drive, passion, energy, you can see it in their eyes, that they are not motivated nor excited about their job. Employees whom are treated well & right will not lose the drive nor motivation so easily. Try to find out the reason WHY they’re feeling this way (because if you do stay, this will happen to you too!)

4️⃣ EMPLOYEES TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE COMPANY

An employee who loves and respect his/her job will NOT hate their job, or take advantage of it. Personally, I’ve seen many employees take advantage of their jobs by being lazy, delaying their timelines, pushing work to others and even leaving their jobs early. It is very obvious if it is done without any blatant respect for the boss. Like honestly do you even like your job? 😞

5️⃣ EMPLOYEES TALK BAD ABOUT THEIR BOSSES

An employee that respect their bosses/leader will NOT constantly bad mouth about the job and their bosses all the time. If it’s once or twice, it is fine (I mean who doesn’t love a lil gossipy sesh) but if they have NOTHING good to say about the company, that is a HUGE RED FLAG 🚩 btw, make sure to fact check first before jumping to conclusions too!

6️⃣ THEY DO NOT PAY YOU ON TIME

Let’s just say it - to be credited your salary & CPF on time is a basic fundamental. If you are not paid on time, you should just LEAVE because it’s a HUGE MAJOR RED FLAG 🚩 No bosses in their right sane mind will deny or delay their employees their rightful salary. It is downright disrespectful and honestly, unethical. If you experienced this in the first 3 months, don’t even bother continue working with them after your probation. Just leave!

Of course, take all of the above content w a pinch of salt and heed the advice that resonates best with you.
